Patio Dress FAQ

Thanks for your interest in my custom patio dresses! Want to know more about the process?
Read on for more info.

What inspired you to start sewing patio dresses?
In the spring of 2021 I was asked to copy a client’s favorite vintage patio dress. Secretly I had been waiting for this request for a long time – I’m a big fan of patio dresses, vintage trims and of course sparkle!

How much does a custom patio dress cost?
My dresses are made to measure and start at $185. The fuller the skirt, the more fabric and trim, thus the higher the cost. More intricate designs, like contrasting yoke details etc. will also up the price.

Contact me for a quote. A 50% deposit is required to start. You choose a fabric color from the color chart (below), if I have some on hand I can send you a swatch. Then I will source options for coordinating trim, and we will finalize ric rac colors and all the design details. Measurements are easy, see more on that below.

How long does it take to have a dress made?
The dresses come together pretty quickly, it’s typically the sourcing of materials that takes time. My waitlist is generally booked a month or two in advance, but I can work with deadlines.

How much trim do you need?
Depending on the sweep of the skirt, you can estimate each patio dress will take a minimum of 5 yards jacquard trim, and as many as 30+ yards of ric rac. It all depends on how far you want to take the embellishment.

Where do you source your trim?
I prefer to use vintage materials when possible, most of my vintage trims come from eBay. You can really go broke buying trim! I factor a baseline budget for trim into the cost of my dresses. Depending on the trim, the price per yard can be anywhere from $0.50 to $5.00+

What patterns do you use for your patio dresses?
Most of my patterns are self-drafted. The collared bodice for my patio dresses is a copy of a client’s vintage dress. The peasant top style is also my own creation, inspired by a favorite top of my own. In the future I hope to develop a long sleeve option, as well as a halter top.
My dresses typically have an elastic waist, but I can also do a patio set with skirt and coordinating blouse.

What measurements do you need?
I will need your full bust/chest (with a bra if you wear one), your natural waist, full hip, your height and preferred skirt length.

What type of fabric do you use?
I use a lightweight cotton-poly blend for my patio dresses. It comes in over 75 colors and is manufactured in the USA. It has a permanent press finish that has a sheen similar to a vintage polished cotton.

What about garment care?
In general I recommend dry cleaning for anything with metallic trim. The woven jacquard trim can also be delicate. If wash and wear is something you are after, the fabric I use washes well but I would recommend all cotton ric rac and trims.
Patio dresses were originally marketed to tourists. Designed to be thrown into a suitcase, they are not meant to be ironed and the fabric can be spot cleaned easily.

Can I choose an alternative fabric for my dress?
Yes! I have done a few patio dresses with prints and they are a joy to sew. I love a good novelty print, or ditzy calico. I source most of my fabrics from eBay or local creative reuse stores. Clients have also ordered fabric and had it shipped to me in the past.

What if I’m not big on ric rac?
I would love to do some patio dresses with lace or fringe! Let’s talk.
